The lively port city and capital of Messenia, nestled between the Taygetos Mountains and the Messenian Gulf, is famous for its vibrant promenade and its long sandy beach. Kalamata was most likely built on the ruins of the Homeric city of Farai. Since the 13th century, at the beginning of Frankish rule in the Peloponnese, the city has been an important center of trade and culture. After the Greek Revolution against Ottoman rule, Kalamata gained importance and later played an active role in trade and industry in the Peloponnese during the 20th century. With the "International Center for Dance" and the "International Dance Festival," whose influence extends beyond the country, the city has established itself culturally and is a strong attraction for artists and visitors.
From Kampetanaki Castle with its unique panoramic view, the Archaeological Museum, Byzantine churches, the open-air railway park, neoclassical buildings, recreational areas, to the endless beach, Kalamata radiates its Mediterranean culture and the vibrant pulse of a lively city.
