Although somewhat remote on the southeastern coast of Laconia, a visit to Monemvasia is a must on any Peloponnese journey.
Built on a huge rock rising from the sea, this picturesque small town features cube-shaped houses, narrow winding alleys, and numerous Byzantine churches. Long abandoned and left in ruins, it has been carefully restored over recent decades by foreign artists and affluent Greeks.
The old town of Monemvasia, dating back to Byzantine and Frankish times, was once an important fortress due to its strategic location. Today, it is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Surrounded by massive defensive walls, the car-free old town rises above the sea. It charms visitors with its narrow streets, beautiful old houses, traditional tavernas, galleries, and craft shops.
