The small harbor town in the Laconian Gulf, about 45 km south of the city of Sparta, was in ancient times the port of Sparta and is today the capital of the Laconian Mani. In a beautiful hillside location, colorful neoclassical houses line the picturesque harbor of the town. From Gythio, ferries depart to the islands of Kythera and Crete.
The town is surrounded by beautiful beaches and is an ideal starting point for day trips in the Laconia region. Holidays in Gythio can be combined with visits to Monemvasia, Kythera, Kalamata, Mystras, and other regions of the Peloponnese. On the hill of Larysion above the town, remains of an ancient theatre can be found.
The small, flat former island of Kranae, located directly at the entrance of the harbor and now connected to the mainland, is home to a traditional tower. Many such towers can be found throughout the Mani region.
