Discover Nafplio

Nafplio harbor town

Nafplio is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Greece and is picturesquely located on the eastern coast of the Argolic Gulf in the Peloponnese. This charming harbor town combines historic architecture, Mediterranean atmosphere, and impressive fortifications into a truly unique travel destination. Anyone spending a holiday in Argolis should definitely plan a visit to Nafplio.

Even in ancient times, Nafplio was an important harbor of the nearby city of Argos. After Greek independence, Nafplio became the first capital of the newly founded Greek state in 1828. Under Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias, the town developed into the political center of the young nation. Greece’s first king, Prince Otto of Bavaria, also initially ruled from here before the capital was moved to Athens in 1834.

Today, Nafplio is the capital of the Argolis region and has around 16,000 inhabitants. The town delights visitors with its exceptionally well-preserved historic center. Narrow streets, neoclassical 19th-century buildings, elegant squares, and lovingly restored houses give Nafplio its very special charm. Small boutiques, cozy cafés, and traditional tavernas invite visitors to linger and enjoy the atmosphere.

Wide promenades, cobbled squares, and romantic alleyways lead all the way to the harbor, where fishing boats and sailing yachts gently sway in the turquoise waters.

The townscape is shaped by influences from different eras – Venetian, Ottoman, and neoclassical architecture blend together into a harmonious overall picture. Museums, churches, and historic buildings tell the story of the town’s eventful past.

The Three Fortresses of Nafplio

Fortresses of Nafplio

Above the town and in the harbor rise three impressive fortifications, which are among the region’s most famous attractions.

  • Palamidi: This mighty Venetian fortress towers high above the town. Reached via a staircase of around 999 steps, it rewards visitors with spectacular views over Nafplio, the Argolic Gulf, and the surrounding landscape.
  • Akronafplia: The oldest fortress of the town is located directly above the old town. It is considered the historic acropolis of Nafplio and also offers beautiful views of both the sea and the town.
  • Bourtzi: The small fortress on an island in the harbor is the landmark of Nafplio. This Venetian “sea tower” was once built to defend the harbor and today is one of the town’s most photographed sights.
