Leonidio is a very traditional Greek town that is well worth getting to know. The town itself has around 3,000 inhabitants. It is located in a fertile valley surrounded by the impressive mountains of the Parnon range, about 5 km from the sea.
Coming down from the mountains, the gorge gradually opens into a wide, fertile plain, crossed by the Daphnon River, which is dry during the summer months. Leonidio lies in the heart of the Parnon National Park.
From here, beautiful hikes can be made along old donkey trails into the surrounding area. Guided trekking tours can be booked in the village, such as a full moon hike to the rock formations known as the “Three Mills of Leonidio” or a tour to the striking red rock wall, which is increasingly attracting climbers.
Hikes through the surrounding mountain villages are also especially rewarding, offering impressive views of the dramatic mountain landscape. In the village itself, you will still find an authentic Greek atmosphere with narrow streets, stone houses, and traditional tavernas.
The lovingly restored center of Leonidio, with buildings dating back to 1850, is easy to explore on foot. Taverns, cafés, a post office, banks, and small shops provide good local infrastructure.
In recent years, Leonidio has also become a popular climbing destination and is no longer an insider tip. There is a climbing station offering guided tours. The best time to visit is from October onwards, to avoid the summer heat.
By the sea lies the Lakkos area with a beautiful beach. Right on the coast you will find the Lakkos Holiday House and the Nanita Beach House.
