Macedonia is a Greek region that is often overlooked – unfairly so, as there is much to discover in Greece’s largest region. A holiday in a Macedonian vacation home offers the opportunity to spend time on beautiful beaches, go hiking in the mountains, or experience the vibrant metropolis of Thessaloniki. Macedonia is also the homeland of Alexander the Great, who in 336 BC inherited the vast kingdom of his father Philip II and already ruled most of the Balkan Peninsula at the beginning of his reign. During his rule, Alexander successively conquered Egypt, the core Persian territories, and expanded his empire as far as the Hindu Kush. In doing so, he laid the foundations for the Hellenization of Western Asia. After Alexander’s death, the empire gradually disintegrated and later came under Roman and Ottoman rule. This cultural mix is still visible today in many parts of Macedonia.
