Zakynthos, the third-largest of the Ionian Islands, is located on the north-western side of the Peloponnese. In the capital Zakynthos Town, the Venetian influence (13th century AD) can still be clearly felt. The large Markus Square (Markus Platia) was modelled after St. Mark’s Square in Venice.
The landscape of Zakynthos is characterised on the one hand by dramatic steep cliffs with sapphire-blue sea coves, and on the other hand by white sandy beaches that are directly followed by vineyard regions.
