The island covers an area of 27 square kilometers, is 10 km long and 3 km wide, has a coastline of 34 km, around 200 inhabitants, and lies 5 nautical miles west of Rhodes. Chalki, one of the smallest inhabited islands of the Dodecanese, has remained to this day a destination for individual travelers seeking peace and seclusion away from the hustle and bustle of mass tourism. There is a daily ferry connection between Rhodes and Chalki.

As soon as visitors enter the bay, they are welcomed by a colorful settlement made up of beautiful neoclassical buildings. Charming Nimborio (Imborios/Emborios) is the island’s only inhabited settlement and harbor. In the shadow of the imposing bell tower of Agios Nikolaos, the island’s patron saint, colorful and elegant captain’s houses line the waterfront and climb the hillside.

About 2.5 km from the harbor lies Chorio (Village), the island’s former capital, which is now abandoned and uninhabited. Within the Knights’ Castle, only the Church of Agios Nikolaos with its 15th- and 17th-century frescoes has been preserved. The “old village” has been declared a cultural monument by UNESCO, and its architectural integrity is protected by strict regulations. Nimborio (Imborios/Emborios) is also a preserved settlement. All renovation and restoration work on buildings must be carried out with the aim of preserving the unique character of Chalki.

At the beaches of Chalki, visitors can enjoy crystal-clear waters. Swimming is possible almost everywhere, even directly at the harbor. If you prefer sandy beaches, visit Pondamos Beach, located just behind the village hill and easily reachable on foot. Other popular beaches include Kania, Giali with its white pebbles, and Areta, which can only be reached by boat.

A little farther from the center, about a 1.5-hour walk away, lies the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Alarga. The monastery celebrates the island’s largest festival in honor of the saint on August 29.

The Church of the Virgin Mary also dominates this wild and barren landscape. The building, adorned with magnificent wall paintings, dates back to the 15th century. Traditionally, the entire village makes a pilgrimage to the church on August 15 and on the evening before to celebrate.
