Discover Rethymno

Discover Rethymno

Where beauty meets tradition.

The region lies between Chania in the west and Heraklion in the east. To the north it is bordered by the Cretan Sea, while the Libyan Sea surrounds the southern coast. The administrative center of the region is the town of Rethymno, located approximately 75 km west of Heraklion.

The northern coastline of Crete, stretching from Episkopi east of the Apokoronas Peninsula through Rethymno to Fodele near Heraklion, as well as the southern coast from Plakias to Agia Galini, is characterized by diverse green landscapes with extensive sandy beaches around Rethymno and dramatic rugged mountain scenery with rocky outcrops and secluded coves in the south.

The high snow-capped peaks of the Ida Mountains, including Psiloritis – the highest mountain on Crete – rugged gorges, hidden springs and waterfalls, plateaus, rivers and streams, and an emerald-green coastline shape the landscape. In the north lies the old Venetian town of Rethymno, while the south offers charming villages and an authentic coastline full of contrasts and untouched beauty.

Traveling south from Rethymno on the northern coast, visitors encounter the Kotsifou and Kourtaliotiko gorges, the valleys and plains of the Messara landscape, and traditional inland villages. Beyond this, the endless blue of the sea unfolds: Plakias, Damnoni, Triopetra, Agios Pavlos, and Agia Galini – places of pure authenticity with fine endless sandy beaches. These destinations offer visitors true tranquility, far away from mass tourism.

Along this enchanting southern coast of Crete, our carefully selected accommodations near Triopetra provide a relaxing and peaceful holiday for families, friends, or couples.

On the northern coastline away from bustling Rethymno, our holiday homes near Agia Triada, Sfakaki, and Prinos offer peace and seclusion.

Swimming and Beaches in the Rethymno Region

The northern coastline of Crete, east of the Apokoronas Peninsula through Rethymno toward Heraklion, features diverse green landscapes with long sandy beaches around Rethymno as well as dramatic scenery with rocky outcrops and sheltered bays near Panormo and Bali.

The Rethymno region is famous for its fine sandy beaches. Along the northern coast east of the city, around 15 km of sandy beach stretches through Platanes to the beaches of Adelianos Kampos and Sfakaki. The long shallow beaches between Rethymno and Heraklion – including Platanes, Adelianos Kampos, Missiria, Sfakaki, Geropotamos, and Bali – are well organized and offer numerous water sports opportunities.

The southern coast along the Libyan Sea, framed by steep mountain slopes, gorges, rugged coves, and rocky headlands, is home to many unique sandy beaches with azure-blue waters and bright sand: Preveli, Plakias, Damnoni, Triopetra, Agios Pavlos, and Agia Galini.
