Spetses
Offshore of the Argolian coast near Porto Cheli, at the entrance of the gulf, there is the 22 sq. km island Spetses. Its 5000 inhabitants in winter double during the summer months.
To three quarters covered with pine trees, the name of the island was Pityoussa (Pine Island) in the antiquity and was known because of the good climate. Today the island is a popular destination of many Athenians who have her summer cottages and villas here.
Spetses is already since the former 70-years a car-free island. Vehicles of delivery, motorbikes and a coach which drives around the island are restrictively allowed - horse carriages determine the picture of the island.
Centre of the island is the place above the small harbor basin where today the cafe house chairs stand behind menacing cannons on nice pebble mosaic ground.
