Nikiti

The village lies on the northern coast of the Bay Toronaios the west coast of Sithonia, about 110 km southeast of Thessaloniki and counts about 3000 inhabitants. Nikiti consists of two districts, the old village center, about 2 km inland from the main road and the newer part, which drags from the main road towards the sea and along the beautiful sandy beach. In winter / spring 2009, the new marina and harbor promenade was finished. The history of the place goes back to ancient times. This was the place Galepsos, which was founded in the 8th Century BC. by settlers from Euboea. Galepsos sent recruits to the Persian army and participated in the Persian wars against Athens.

After the defeat of the Persians, Galepsos joined the Attic Alliance. In Roman times people relocated to Olynthos and the city remained uninhabited. From the late ancient times you can see now part of an early Christian basilica in the old village of Nikiti. In the 13th and 14th century the area belonged to the holy Mount Athos ". Not until 1822 the reconstruction of the village started. On the banks of a scenic ally very interesting gorge, with many old exemplary restored houses, beautifully cobbled paths, nice small pensions and taverns is the old Nikiti today a jewel of the entire region.
