Syros – Capital of the Cyclades

Syros

Syros, the capital of the Cyclades, is home to Ermoupolis, the island’s main port and administrative center. The town climbs up two hills and is divided into two Christian communities: on the left the Catholic community, on the right the Greek Orthodox. Two separate worlds that have lived together in harmony for centuries. At the top of the hills stand the churches of Saint George and Saint Nicholas. A gentle, idyllic scene unfolds as the ship enters the harbor. A touch of nostalgia lingers in the narrow streets of Ano Syros, the medieval town above the port. The island experienced wealth, prosperity, and cultural growth in the 19th century, mainly through shipbuilding and trade. Evidence of this prosperity can still be seen today in many beautiful buildings and mansions, the town hall (designed by the German architect Ziller around 1890), as well as the theater and opera house. The island presents itself as cosmopolitan, open, elegant, and well-kept. Numerous sandy bays around the island, charming small villages, and coastal settlements complete the picture.

Near Ermoupolis on the western coast of the island lies the beautiful sandy bay of Kini. In an exposed location above the sea stands our Holiday Home Syriani with its own private pool.
