Ermoupolis is the capital of the Cyclades and is the administrative headquarter. The town is built along two hills with two different Christian groups, the Catholics on the left and the Greek Orthodox on the right These are two different worlds which have been living together in peace and harmony for many centuries now. The churches St George and St Nikolaos are located on top of the two hills and look very idyllic from the harbour’s perspective. The narrow streets of the medieval town of Ano Syros make a very nostalgic impression. The ship building industry as well as the trading industry fostered the prosperity and cultural boom of the island during the 19th century. Several historical buildings and town houses such as the theatre and opera house remind visitors of these times. The town hall which was designed by the German architect Ziller in 1890 is another example of the impressive architecture of the 19th century.
